I chose Journalism as I was already reading news in a local radio station and my Editor had done the post-grad, so the degree seemed the logical step. After coming down for my interview how could I not want to study here!? My interview laid out the foundations and what I could expect. I was looking forward to broadening my knowledge of journalistic techniques and questioning media in a way I hadn't thought of before.
Of course there is also the town itself. The moment I turned off the A road in Truro and saw the palm trees, I knew I didn't want to be anywhere else. I still visit at least once a year and look forward to finally moving back there!
I have had a varied career since leaving Falmouth, working in Ibiza, Geneva and now London. I am currently a Producer at Nickelodeon Television. I work in the creative commercial department developing advertising strategies for commercial partners and how they can work with the Nickelodeon brand and our audience. It's a varied role that uses all production processes and platforms as well as coming up with lots of ideas for clients. Examples of campaigns I have produced include Scooby Doo, Weetos, Vauxhall and Lego, so a real mixture. Before moving into this sector I worked in regular TV on shows such as Fame Academy, a couple of series of Big Brother, Senior Producer/Director at Just Fabulous Television and I wrote and produced the second series of Bafta Award winning Me.TV.
Both my courses were invaluable as I may not have followed the traditional path into a career in Journalism but my tutors were so knowledgeable about the industry as a whole it was really was like the world was my oyster. The people I studied with have stayed good friends and in some cases, even better contacts! As I think everyone who studied at Falmouth will agree it is truly an amazing place to study and no one would be where they are now without such a great foundation.
