James Hodson & Jason Keet: Creative Advertising MA graduates

MA Creative Advertising 2008-2009

James Hodson & Jason KeetThe main thing we learned on the course at Falmouth was the mechanics of advertising. Keep it simple, keep it interesting and leave just enough to the punter's imagination. It sounds easy, but that's pretty much what we do every day.

As a team, we're really different people. We have different skills and a different outlook on life, so we bring all of these attributes to our work. It was the course that brought us together. We'd each worked with a few people before we were paired up, and then had to tackle a couple of briefs together. Something clicked almost immediately. We knew it was right, so we went for it. Of course, things don't always run smoothly and it was difficult at first, but in the end we pulled together and got what we both wanted - a job in advertising.

There was no real magic to it, just hard work and persistence. After we left Falmouth, we did a placement at an agency called Billington Cartmell, which was really good for sharpening our skills. Then we entered our book into the Cream Awards, and luckily managed to get in. That's where we met the ECD of Agency Republic, and he gave us a placement. After that it's a case of cracking every brief that comes your way until they take you on. In the end we were on placement for 6 months before they hired us. It can take a while, but with commitment and patience an opportunity will open up eventually.

At Agency Republic we've worked on loads of different accounts, from PlayStation and Smirnoff to O2 and Nivea. It's been a really great experience for us, and we've never really looked back.

We wouldn't have a job if it wasn't for this course.
