Creative Advertising graduates Alex Goulart and Veerle Vandenbroucke turned their student ‘dream team’ collaboration into a professional winning formula in Belgium.

They have formed a two-person creative team within the advertising agency Duval Guillaume in Antwerp. Alex is Copyrighter to Veerle’s Art Director; together they have created advertisements and branding concepts for a variety of clients: from Virgin Express, to the construction vehicles company Komstsu, to Belgian magazines. The duo work across a variety of advertising mediums including radio, television, internet and print media.

“We wanted to work at a great agency with major clout. As Veerle is Belgian and I hail from the UK, both countries were immediate and very popular possibilities. In the end, the chance to gain European advertising experience and diversifying our portfolio sealed the deal.

After graduating, Alex and Veerle moved to north London to start a three week placement with an advertising agency they had won over with their impressive campaign portfolio at the D&AD New Blood exhibition. They did the typical round of agencies when the placement finished.

Veerle returned to Belgium in the Autumn. While there, she took the opportunity to show off the duo’s portfolio to Duval Guillaume.

“They called her later that day to say we’d been hired. The campaigns we had begun on the UCF advertising course got us the job.”

The duo went on to win the global Rizla business in a pitch against six European and UK agencies. Challenged to find a concept that would work across multiple markets, the pitch process involved several rounds of elimination and market testing.

“We’ve been very lucky because the agency has ambitious plans for growth. As a result, we have been given considerable responsibility at an early stage.”

“We were educated in the principles of good advertising, with an emphasis on developing a coherent and single-minded proposition before getting to the creative executions. The course culminated in the production of a portfolio that focused on inventive, single-minded strategies that fitted the target brands perfectly."
