Sue Smith: Choreography MA graduate

Sue Smith is now lecturing in choreography and continuing her own practice working with dance in health and community contexts and exploring site-specific work.

She says:

"It's a breath of fresh air to discuss making work with composers, theatre-makers and curators. The MA has offered so many opportunities to see things with a new perspective and to question how and why I make work.

There is a lot of freedom to take the MA where you want it to go and to find the purpose of the research in your practice. Collaborations quickly emerge and the choreographic LAB was a brilliant time to explore and play.

The dialogue and exchange with other students has invigorated my research and has encouraged me to question how I work and where it fits in to a wider field. It is great to find the space to challenge what I do and to engage in debate with others across the art forms.

It's been inspiring and thought-provoking to have had so many different artists presenting in the seminars. There is definitely a feeling that practice and definitions of individual practices are challenged and that collaboration is discussed from day one.

It's giving me lots of starting points for new work and a chance to get back to process, away from the pressures of daily work and deadlines."
