Rebecca Ellis: Theatre BA(Hons) graduate

Rebecca EllisRebecca Ellis works in what is probably one of the most beautiful buildings in Britain, the De La Warr Pavilion, described as a Modernist icon for contemporary art, and situated a stone's throw from the beach at Bexhill on Sea, East Sussex.

After graduating in 2005, Rebecca was fortunate enough to be given the job of Front of House Manager at the De La Warr Pavilion, which re-opened in October 2005 after a major refurbishment. The Pavilion now has an enviable reputation as home to some of the best contemporary art on the international circuit, exhibited in two beautifully restored galleries. It also hosts a year-round programme of theatre and music.

As well as her work at the De La Warr, Rebecca began working freelance as a theatre practitioner, running projects with Creative Partnerships, and became a member of the DAB Community Arts Group. DAB arts are a professional group of artists who work with the community on contemporary projects, making art, encouraging communication and facilitating creativity to enhance both individual and collective cultural experience.

Another community project in which Rebecca has been involved as an outreach officer is ‘Class & Corruption', a large-scale, multi art-form event currently (summer 2009) nearing performance in Rother, East Sussex. Inspired by Brecht's Threepenny Opera, Class & Corruption brings professional singer/performers together with community choirs from Rother and the South East, other professional musicians, designers, composers and directors.

Rebecca has recently been commissioned by Pulse Youth, an organisation set up by the government to engage young people in health services, to devise a project on youth homelessness, on which she has worked alongside the writer Christine Harmar Brown. She is currently working on making this project part of a peer training program.

Rebecca is still at the De La Warr pavilion, but she is now Programming Assistant, Live Performance. She is part of the artistic programming team, researching and implementing the live programme events, and looking at convergent programming opportunities that coincide with the exhibition programme, the most recent being the Michael Nyman season. She plans to stay at the Pavilion, and is overseeing a current programming strand, Random Fridays, which showcases new interdisciplinary work.
