Hannah Sullivan: Theatre BA(Hons) graduate

BA(Hons) Theatre, 2006 - 2009

Hannah SullivanI graduated in 2009, after which I moved to Bristol to run an independent theatre company, Openbatch Theatre, with a handful of fellow graduates. As a company we now perform in and around Bristol, run workshops and continue to make new work. I also work as a Production Assistant on ‘Ausform Performance Platform', who host events at The Cube and The Bristol Old Vic - promoting the encouragement and discussion of dance, film, puppetry and theatre. I've also had the pleasure of touring a shadow puppetry show with Clockwork Moth (another UCF graduate company) during spring 2010.

I'm also studying a Performance Research MA at the University of Bristol - looking at archive based research, practice based research and Theatre History. My degree really set me up for the MA and my training in contemporary devised theatre means
I have something unique to offer the discussions.

My degree also gave me a wealth of devising tools that I now use to create work and run workshops. I learnt how to collaborate in a group, particularly about certain roles - such as directing and dramaturgy. I now have a broad knowledge of contemporary theatre practitioners and enjoyed seeing many inspiring performances by visiting companies to the University College. The course encouraged interdisciplinary practice and gave me experience in performing and presenting my work.

I liked the fact that the course was project-based - we were really given the opportunity to see things through in great detail. The University College's approach allowed me to follow my own path and supported my particular interests. The tutors always had time for us and would draw on their industry experience and knowledge of the subject to point you in the right and/or interesting direction. I also made an excellent network of creative friends, who I now can call on to make work, create events and discuss theatre and ideas with.
