Simon Hawtin: Television Production MA graduate

Simon Hawtin

When I graduated, I was able to walk into an entry-level job and say ‘here are a number of films I've shot and edited'. Falmouth did that. It enabled me to hit the ground running.

MA Television Production: 2005-2006 (Development)

I started my TV career relatively late, after spending much of my twenties working in festival and event management, and travelling the world. But I always knew I wanted to make documentaries, so chose the TV Production MA at Falmouth because it offered a really practical course where I could develop hands on skills. After graduating in 2006, I was able to hit the TV career path running, and I've been in work ever since.

I have worked on productions including Man vs. Wild (Discovery Channel), The Human Footprint (Channel 4) and Dallas DNA (Investigation Discovery). But I found a niche within TV development, and I am now Head of Development at Touch Productions. We make documentary, specialist factual and factual entertainment programmes, and we're about to shoot our first 3D film. It's my job to create, write and pitch our big new ideas to broadcasters including the BBC, Channel 4, Sky, Discovery Channel, National Geographic and more. Believe me when I say no two days are the same.
