Karen Miller: Professional Writing PgDip graduate

Karen Miller is the Editor for www.filmstreet.co.uk a website designed to engage primary aged children with film and filmmaking.

She authors, edits and moderates all of the content for the site and promotes Film Street to its target audiences.

Film Street was commissioned by Culture Online and is managed by First Light Movies in partnership with the BFI, the UK Film Council, CBBC and Creative Partnerships. The organisation aims to encourage children's further participation and engagement with film culture. It aspires to introduce children to a wider range of film through its online cinema platform. It shows films made by children and films from around the world, alongside the trailers from mainstream Hollywood films.

Why the emphasis on young filmakers? Karen provided the illumination. "Making their own films gives children the chance to reach their full potential with a filmmaking role that exploits their specific talents. We want to encourage expression through filmmaking and show how it can be used as a tool to support development in other areas of learning." Speaking about the relationship between film and children, Karen finished by saying, "Filmmaking enables children to develop their creative, team working and technical skills, expressing themselves through a media that transcends barriers in literacy, language and cultural background."

When asked about her experience at University College Falmouth, Karen said: "Completing the Professional Writing course gave me the confidence to write for the education market."

"The practical experience, plus knowledge of writing and maintaining a website, helped me secure my current job on Film Street," she said when discussing the practical applications of the course.
