Gideon Goldberg: Broadcasting BA(Hons) graduate

BA(Hons) Broadcasting* - 2004 - 2007

Gideon GoldbergI graduated in 2007 and now work on the Guardian website as a Quality Assurance Analyst, testing the website for defects and looking at new features to make sure they meet the business requirements. After graduating from Falmouth, I got a place on the BBC Extend work placement scheme for disabled people. From there, I was offered my first job, working on a disability magazine
website called Ouch!

The course was an excellent combination of theory and practice but probably the best bit for me was getting my hands on industry-standard audio and video equipment. The Media Centre is great - it has all the latest equipment, for example solid state
audio recorders that let you record straight to the hard disk and download into an edit suite. When it came to making my own documentary for the course, which was broadcast on BBC Radio Cornwall, I was able to edit it in a Pro Tools industry-standard audio editing suite. So when I started working, I was already familiar with all the equipment and software they use.

I found the final practical project - in my case, a documentary called Cornwall's Jewish Journey - very rewarding because I was able to work independently. My major dissertation also gave me a lot of time to reflect on theoretical concepts relating to the media and follow my own interests. Also, in my second year, I went to Spain for five months as part of the Erasmus scheme, which was a big experience for me as I didn't speak any Spanish when I went out there.

Not only does the course give you a critical understanding of the media and the ability to engage with the equipment you'll need professionally, but Falmouth is also a truly lovely place to study. It's a completely different environment to most universities - there's a diverse, friendly student population and lots of interaction between different students on different courses.
