Fern Beresford: Film BA(Hons) graduate

BA(Hons) Film, 2003 - 2006

I graduated with a 1st class degree in 2006, and worked as a production assistant on a number of MTV shows, camera woman, docu-drama editor, researcher and director's assistant on adverts and music promos.

I recently wrote and directed my first commissioned short film for the Ctrl.Alt.Shift Film Project. This initiative is aimed at aspiring young film-makers, providing the chance to tackle one of three key issues: War + Peace, Gender + Power and HIV + Stigma. If I could supply the idea, they'd supply the support, which came in the form of a producer, budget and mentor. The film won bronze at The Smalls short film awards and was screened at the Raindance Film Festival, where I was invited to sit on a Q&A panel alongside other film-makers and industry folk. I was also asked to write a blog for the Independent newspaper about my experience.

Film at Falmouth set me in good stead for a career in the media. When I graduated I had a good working knowledge of a number of cameras, editing software and design programs, all of which helped me get my first proper production jobs. The lecturers were also hugely supportive and pushed me to achieve my best.
