International showcase for Cornwall creative media industry

Cornwall’s growing creative media industry has been showcased to two highly successful digital entrepreneurs from Hong Kong. Kwai-Bun and Amy Tsang visited London and Cornwall as part of a British Council Digital Pioneers Programme. In Cornwall they were hosted by Stafford Sumner, himself a Digital Pioneer and founder of email marketing agency, Jarrang.

A highlight of their tour was a visit to University College Falmouth’s Media Centre at the Combined Universities in Cornwall (CUC) Tremough Campus, at Penryn. The CUC is the Objective One flagship project.

As part of the tour Kwai-Bun gave a talk to BA (Hons) Digital Animation students and presented a showreel demonstrating the work of his award winning company ManyMany Creations, of which he is both founder and creative director. Tsang was also on hand to answer students’ questions about licensing and branding within the animation industry, drawing on her experience in the international business arena working with the likes of Disney and Jidou.

Paul Bason, University College Falmouth’s Digital Media Innovations Director, said: “There are some real opportunities here for international collaboration such as long distance mentoring between experts like these from the Hong Kong digital media industry and our students. We are hoping to build much stronger links with both the Digital Pioneers and other educational establishments in Hong Kong to benefit the students at CUC.”

Stafford hosted the pair after they had spent ten days in London as part of the Digital Pioneer programme, which is intended to develop a network of young creative entrepreneurs in Hong Kong and the UK. He also gave them tours of the Eden project, Tate St Ives and Fluid Branding, a St Austell-based company specialising in promotional products.

I am aiming to strengthen links between businesses and the Combined Universities in Cornwall so companies like mine can easily source graduates with the right skills on their doorsteps. I hope that this visit supported that aim as well as showcased our graduates and facilities to two very successful business people from Asia.”

Carleen Kelemen, Director of the Objective One Partnership, said: “Objective One and now the Convergence Programmes are aimed at increasing the global business competitiveness of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. One area investment is supporting is new media. Knowledge transfer visits such as this, organised by Stafford, are invaluable in engaging on a global stage and demonstrating to the world what we are capable of and hopefully inspiring our students to aim even higher.”
