Megan Wakefield: 20th Century Art & Design MA graduate

MA 20th Century Art & Design: Histories & Theories

I studied English at Sussex University and Fine Art at University College Falmouth before starting the MA 20th Century Art & Design: Histories &Theories in 2006. As a graduate of English and Fine Art I had always been looking for ways to combine my writing skills with my strong interest in the visual arts. I worked as a Communications intern at Tate St Ives in 2007, and won a Fulton Travel Bursary in 2008. The bursary allowed me to interview the artist Neville Gabie as research for my Masters thesis on art and participatory practice.

The support and motivation I gained from the small team at Tate helped focus my career aspirations, and I was able to see how closely departments interact in a small gallery setting. I have kept in regular contact with the national arts press, writing some interpretive text for the gallery itself and drawing on knowledge from my studies in Twentieth Century Art and Design.

I have written reviews and other texts for artists in the Cornwall region, Proof Magazine and Artist's Newsletter. I have also written regular press releases on the Tate St Ives Educational initiatives and exhibitions for local and national print and web-based media. My work at Tate St Ives built upon practical skills as I learnt how vital the editing and proof-reading process is. The internship was a very positive experience that informed me about the role of a Press Officer as well as other gallery roles.
