Mark Hobbs: 20th Century Art & Design MA graduate

MA 20th Century Art & Design: Histories & Theories, 2003 - 2006

I studied at both undergraduate and postgraduate level at Falmouth. In 1997 I graduated from the Graphic Information Design course and went on to enjoy six successful years working in interdisciplinary design practices in London. In 2003 I returned to Falmouth in order to study on the PgDip/MA 20th Century Art & Design: Histories & Theories course. I wanted some time-out from my hectic existence in London, to return to education and study on a research-based course. Falmouth was the natural choice because I knew it would offer a space in which to relax and reflect, combined with great facilities for learning and research.

My Masters dissertation concentrated on the photomontage activities of the Berlin Dada group. The Masters programme gave me the inspiration and conviction to continue my research and forge a new career in academia. I am now based at the University of Glasgow, where I am working on my PhD and getting involved in teaching. My research concentrates on artistic representations of Berlin’s working-class districts during the 1920s. My fascination with Berlin’s art and architecture originates from a study trip to the city in 2005, as part of the MA programme at Falmouth.
