MA 20th Century Art & Design: Histories & Theories

Following an undergraduate degree in Applied Arts and several years working in design practices, I enrolled on the 20th Century Art & Design MA for an academic challenge. I chose Falmouth because of the twentieth century focus of the MA course. I knew my interests lay in this particular period and the course offered the opportunity to really get to grips with the meanings of modernity.

The course allowed me to develop my personal interest in architecture and to contextualise my studies. In my 3rd year this led to a dissertation study of a post-war housing estate in Plymouth named Ernesettle. This case study proved to be so fertile that I now plan to expand on it with a more detailed research project at PhD level.

Undoubtedly my experience on the MA course shaped my understanding of how people relate to space and place. This provided me with a direction for both future study and community engagement. I continue to work in architecture and recently co-founded greaterplymouth. This is a collaborative organisation that aims to promote and celebrate the city's past and present through participatory events.
