Language requirements

It is really important for you to have the required English Language skills. You will study with English students who speak quite quickly and in slang. You will also be learning a lot of new technical terms and information on art, media and design.

If you have problems with listening and communicating you will find it very difficult to keep up with your studies.

It is recommended that applicants take the IELTS test as it gives the most accurate and most detailed profile of the candidate’s proficiency. However, if it is impossible for potential students to take the IELTS test, there are many other commercial tests of English available. More information about English language tests is available here.

We can help you but you must have the basic requirements of IELTS level 5.5 for Foundation studies, 6.0 for undergraduate and 6.5 for postgraduate degrees.

If you are not at the right level, contact our English for Academic Purposes staff to discuss how you can reach the level required for study. Our English Language Study Skills Course is a three week programme before the start of the degree courses, designed to develop the language skills you will need for your studies at University College Falmouth. Email Isabel Noon at languages@falmouth.ac.uk for more information about available courses.

Please be realistic about your language skills - if you do start with us too early you may not complete the course and will fail to have a rewarding experience. There are many English Language schools in the Bournemouth and Poole area at which many of our students have studied. Visit the British Council site for a list of accredited schools in the UK. There are a large number of schools in the south west which classes.that will prepare you for study at university level.
