Our Writing Lab service

Image representing writing labThis service is for students of all levels, from all year groups. In the first term, the majority of appointments are with 3rd years writing their dissertations; we also see 1st year students who want to know if their early essays satisfy the assignment requirements.

Mature students often make use of the service to reacquaint themselves with academic writing and students from all years come to get advice on how to improve their essay grades from a Pass to a Merit, or from a Merit to a Distinction.

Students might want to make an appointment if their writing would benefit from advice on:

  • Grammar
  • Conventions, especially quotation and referencing
  • Overall structure
  • Paragraph structure
  • Articulating ideas and arguments clearly
  • Understanding the brief
  • Addressing the question
  • Writing in an appropriate academic register
  • Vocabulary
  • Writing analytically rather than descriptively
  • Distinguishing between others’ ideas and their own
  • Preparing for the essay in areas such as time management note-taking

Appointments last 30 minutes and are conducted 1 to 1. If students want to discuss their writing (rather than help with planning or referencing for example), then they are expected to deliver a paper or electronic copy of the work to ASK at least 24 hours before the appointment. Appointments can be arranged over the phone, by email, or by dropping in to the office.
