Our history & our future
Falmouth School of Art was founded in 1902 and has a strong tradition in arts education. The School evolved into Falmouth College of Arts in the 1990s and became University College Falmouth in 2004, following the award of Taught Degree Awarding Powers by the Privy Council.
Where we are now
University College Falmouth (the ‘College’ or ‘UCF’) is a leading specialist college of Art, Design and Media located on two main campuses: Woodlane, in Falmouth and Tremough, in Penryn. The College believes that its distinctiveness is defined by: the specialist nature of its academic provision, the emphasis on professional practice, its support for and approach to student learning, and its size and stunning, coastal location.
UCF has a strong brand enjoying a national and international reputation for excellence, with students and staff regularly competing for, and winning, major competitions in the creative arts. Indeed, our students enjoy a rich environment to stimulate their creative and intellectual development, and as graduates, pursue successful careers as a result. The College enrolled just over 2200 students in 2006/07 on its Foundation Studies in Art & Design diploma, undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Approximately 4.5% of our current students are from countries outside the EU.
The College has ambitious plans to expand and develop its academic provision over the next five years and will increase its student population over the same period to c3000. The College currently employs around 450 members of staff, including hourly paid lecturers.
Funding arrangements have now been confirmed for the merger between University College Falmouth and Dartington College of Arts, which will provide further exciting opportunities for expansion and add performance arts to our burgeoning portfolio of art, design and media courses.
