Craig Oldham, one of Design Week's Rising Stars.Three graduates from University College Falmouth's BA(Hons) Graphic Design course have been singled out by the national press as rising stars.

Craig Oldham who graduated in 2006 has been featured in Design Week's Rising Stars supplement. Having sought the views of Creative Directors last year, Design Week turned to course leaders known to produce award-winning students for this year's supplement and Falmouth Course Leader, Jon Unwin, had no hesitation in submitting Craig's name.

"Craig excelled within our ideas-based graphic design course and it was not a surprise that he quickly found his creative home at The Chase," explained Jon. "Under the guidance of Ben Casey and Lionel Hatch, his talents had the opportunity to shine on a national and international stage, gaining recognition within months of graduating at the D&AD Awards," Jon added. "It's been non-stop since then, with further success at D&AD, Type Directors Club and the Rose Design Awards, to name but a few, and he has now joined talented Manchester consultancy, Music.

Alex Turvey, described by the Independent as one of 15 creatives who will define the future of the arts in Britain. Image by Marksteen Adamson.Alex Turvey - a director, designer and illustrator with an eclectic oeuvre of projects ranging from music videos to illustrated charity cereal boxes, who graduated from Falmouth in 2005 - has gained recognition as one of 15 creatives who will define the future of the arts in Britain by the Independent; in Dazed & Confused magazine as one of 35 Young Creative Entrepreneurs and in Boards magazine as one of the top six designers to watch.

Having grown up by the sea in Cornwall, he now lives by the river in London where he started his career at Precursor, then co-founded the Norway-UK partnership, Elefant Art and now runs his own eponymous studio. Alex likes nothing better than textural landscapes, anatomical drawings and glitter; and his surreal visions have been applied to work for the likes of Dazed & Confused, Polydor Records, Ford, MTV, Topshop, Budweiser and Nike. Alex has also recently been invited to be a jury member for the prestigious D&AD awards.

Ollie Lindsey who graduated in 2004 and is a founding partner of Play Nicely in Bristol, recently ranked in the Top Ten South West Creative Companies Ones to Watch.

"The calibre of these graduate successes demonstrate that our BA(Hons) Graphic Design course continues to feed the design industry with first rate talent and is testament to the emphasis that we place on creative problem solving, design excellence and developing entrepreneurial flair," concluded Jon Unwin.

University College Falmouth is the only independent Higher Education institution in Cornwall with the powers to award degrees in its own name. It has two campuses in Cornwall - at Woodlane in Falmouth and Tremough in Penryn (which it owns, and jointly manages with the University of Exeter) - and a third campus at Totnes in Devon, following its merger with Dartington College of Arts in 2008.

This merger created a new institution focusing on the expansion of Falmouth's expertise in Art, Design and Media and Dartington's expertise in Choreography, Music, Theatre, Art and Writing. The Devon-based courses will relocate to a new, high-specification Performance Centre at Tremough in 2010, paving the way for a new specialist Arts University in Cornwall by 2012/2013 that will be unique to the South West.

The College is a founding partner in the Combined Universities in Cornwall (CUC), a unique initiative to promote regional economic regeneration through Higher Education, funded mainly by the European Union (Objective One), the South West Regional Development Agency, and the Higher Education Funding Council for England, with support from Cornwall Council.
