UCF played its part in the maritime spectacular that was the Funchal 500 Tall Ships Regatta, with BA(Hons) Journalism students capturing the salty tang of life aboard ship; BA(Hons) Marine & Natural History Photography students illuminating the mysteries of the deep in an exhibition at National Maritime Museum Cornwall, and Adam Stringer from the Business Room at Tremough designing trophies for the event.

Eight first- and second-year students from BA(Hons) Journalism have jumped from desk to deck to compete in this year's challenge. They have created a website - http://tallshipsdiaries.com/ - to which they have been posting daily blogs, videos and photographs to recount their Tall Ships tales - a perfect springboard for their journalistic careers.

Rebecca Baldwin and Mikki Stratton-Monck is reporting from the Far Barcelona; Gavin Embley from British Challenger III; Kezia Clark from the Tecla; Stephen Fothergill and Tim Hall from the STV Kaliakra; and Alex Pesic and Christian Pohle from the Alexander von Humbolt.

From spotting pods of dolphins to what it's like to keep watch beneath the stars, the students' Tall Ships Diaries are both evocative and entertaining.

The exhibition by UCF's Marine & Natural History Photography students, entitled Our Footprint Below, is similarly inspiring. It celebrates Falmouth's rich marine environment in all its guises, from its yachts and golden sands to its docks, boatyards and mussel beds and runs until 4 January 2009.
