Angela Rippon OBEThe Royal Television Society (RTS), Devon and Cornwall and University College Falmouth (UCF) are delighted that this year's Alex Thomson lecture will be given by one of this country's best known faces and voices in British broadcasting, the award winning Angela Rippon OBE.

This joint annual event aims to bring top broadcasters and journalists to Cornwall to inspire students from across the County. The lecture is named after Alex Thomson, Channel 4 News Chief Correspondent who is a Fellow of University College Falmouth.

Angela trained as a journalist in her home town of Plymouth and worked at both the BBC in Plymouth and Westward Television. She then joined BBC National television in 1973, to be appointed the first woman journalist newsreader in 1975.

Her professional work has mainly been centred on News and Current Affairs and her lecture will examine Consumer Journalism.

Angela is equally at home, however, presenting programmes ranging from Top Gear, the BBC's coverage of Lady Diana Spencer and HRH Prince Charles wedding on 29 July 1981 and the BBC's daytime show Cash in the Attic.

In 1996 the Royal Television Society recognised and honoured her extensive contribution to broadcasting by admitting her to the Hall of Fame.

This public lecture will be held at the Chapel Lecture Theatre, Tremough Campus of University College Falmouth on Thursday May 13th at 1830. Admission is free by tickets available from The National Maritime Museum Cornwall. Call 01326 313388 or collect in person during the hours 10am to 5pm.

University College Falmouth is the only independent Higher Education institution in Cornwall with the powers to award degrees in its own name.  It has two campuses in Cornwall - at Woodlane in Falmouth and Tremough in Penryn (which it owns, and jointly manages with the University of Exeter) - and a third campus at Totnes in Devon, following its merger with Dartington College of Arts in 2008.

This merger created a new institution focusing on the expansion of Falmouth's expertise in Art, Design and Media and Dartington's expertise in Choreography, Music, Theatre, Art and Writing.  The Devon-based courses will relocate to a new, high-specification Performance Centre at Tremough in 2010, paving the way for a new specialist Arts University in Cornwall by 2013/2014 that will be unique to the South West.

The University College is a founding partner in the Combined Universities in Cornwall (CUC), a unique initiative to promote regional economic regeneration through Higher Education, funded mainly by the European Union (Objective One and Convergence), the South West Regional Development Agency, and the Higher Education Funding Council for England, with support from Cornwall Council.
