St Mawes Castle and the Fal Estuary

St Mawes Castle was built in the 1540s, under the order of Henry VIII, to protect Falmouth and its estuary from invading ships. The castle offers excellent panoramic views of the Fal estuary, town and port. St Mawes is a short ferry ride from Falmouth but is well worth a trip. The Fal estuary plays host to a variety of water sports and high profile competitions throughout the year and provides the main access route for ships entering Falmouth Harbour.
