Channel Islands and Isle of Man financial support

Guernsey

The Education Department offers support for both undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Undergraduate

Students attending UCF can expect up to £5,223 in maintenance support, in addition to a further £411pa (maximum) to help cover the costs of travelling to/from home at the beginning and end of each term.

Parents may also claim for their children's expenses for the purpose of attending interviews and open days. For this, no more than two trips to the UK can be claimed for, with each trip costing no more than £350.

Postgraduate

Financial assistance may be available to students commencing postgraduate courses at educational establishments outside the Bailiwick. The awards are:

  • Discretionary
  • Subject to conditions being met by the applicant
  • Subject to the overall financial limits set by the States of Guernsey for postgraduate funding

Fully completed applications for postgraduate awards, including the written statement, must reach the Education Department by 30 June preceding the start of the course. Applications will not be considered after this date.

Other

You may be eligible for additional support from one of the main charities based on the island. These are specifically for the educational sector, but may be able to help with specific maintenance costs: www.charity.org.gg

Jersey

To be eligible for funding from the States of Jersey you must meet certain residency and academic criteria and must not be in possession of a loan or financial award from another education authority.

Undergraduate

  • Residency: You and your parents must have been ordinarily resident in Jersey for 5 years immediately before 31 August of the year in which you start the course
  • Academic criteria: All applicants who are looking to study a HE (BA) qualification must achieve at least 2 A level passes (or L3 equivalent)

Postgraduate

Students who wish to undertake a full-time MA degree or doctorate can apply for the Jersey Bursary. This non-means tested, competitive award of up to £10,000 per year is available to students looking to study off-Island, who have achieved a minimum of a 2:1 degree classification from their first degree. The awards are competitive with up to 12 bursaries awarded annually.

Applications for the Jersey Bursary may be made for any academic year of a programme of study or research. Thus if you have raised funds for the year of the course you are currently following but not for remaining years, you are eligible to apply.

Isle of Man

Undergraduate

Students under the age of 30 can expect means-tested support towards both fees and maintenance costs. Those over 30 years of age may only receive support towards fees. Students can also receive a further year of funding if their course lasts longer than the standard 3 years. It has been proposed that only students achieving at least 2 A Levels at grade C will be eligible for such support - please check with the Island's funding team for further details on this.

Postgraduate

Funding for postgraduate study is available, but it has been recently agreed to restrict availability to only those obtaining a first degree at a level of 2:1 or better. Funding will require a means-tested contribution towards tuition fees of up to £1,000 per annum.

Other

In addition to a grant, funding may be available from one of the following independent charities/trusts:

  • Educational Trust Funds: There are funds that are administered by the Department for students under the age of 24 suffering hardship.
  • Decorative and Fine Arts Society Isle of Man (DFAS IOM). A bursary is available to a student studying Art or an Arts related subject (including architecture, furniture design, etc). Applications in writing should be forwarded via the Department and addressed to Dr Anne Lee, Chairman, Isle of Man Decorative and Fine Arts Society.
  • The Lady Monica Cockfield Trust. For Postgraduate students undertaking work linked to the European Union.
  • Spencer/Wright Drama Award. An award is available for those students undertaking a Higher Education course in the field of Drama. For further details, please write to: Mrs Olga Gray, ‘Coardaylis', Ballaughton Close, Douglas, IM2 1JE.
