English Language Study Skills Course

The English Language Study Skills Course is a three week programme for International, EU and Exchange students who plan to study a degree course at University College Falmouth in 2009/2010.

The aim of this course is to develop the language skills that you will need for your studies and your life in Britain. It is based at the Tremough campus in Penryn, just outside Falmouth, Cornwall.

This course is for you if...

you are going to commence study at University College Falmouth in September/October 2009
you want to develop your English language skills before your course starts
you have already met the language requirements of your degree course

Course aims

to expand your academic, functional and social vocabulary and expression
to develop your essay writing and presentation skills
to improve grammatical accuracy and sentence structure
to develop your academic skills - independent research, lecture listening, note-taking, citations
to familiarise you with the College systems and services (library, IT, study skills support )
to prepare you for living in an English speaking environment

Course content

a maximum class size of 15
an average of 20 contact hours a week
weekly individual tutorials
weekly writing practice (feedback given in tutorials)
access to the Learning Space (online resources)
full access to the Learning Resource Centre - Library, IT, databases, image collections
a social programme

Assessment

There is no formal assessment on the course and therefore has no exam or final mark. Instead we encourage you to research an area of interest from your degree course in order to produce an extended piece of writing. You will receive detailed feedback on your work and on how best to continue developing your language skills once your academic course starts.

Social programme

As part of the course you have the option of taking part in various social events. These include activities such as: a boat trip up the river Fal, a beach BBQ, water sports, pub quiz, trips to the Eden project, art galleries, local gardens.
