History of our international relationships and opportunities

University College Falmouth has been actively involved in European Higher Education Initiatives since the Erasmus Programme began in the 1980s, and significant student and staff mobility has been funded by the programme.

The Erasmus programme has also funded intensive projects and the development of a European module. This has brought together a number of European institutions to share the development of approaches to teaching and learning, and to engage with a number of significant issues of contemporary arts practice and research.

The University College has a long-standing international reputation for innovation in Art, Design, Media and Performance. We continue to draw in artists, performers, media practitioners and designer-makers from across the world. We also have a national and international reputation for practice and research through the work of our staff and students, past and present.

Our Performance courses grew out of Dartington College of Art's well established engagement with education, contemporary arts practice and internationalism; this history constitutes a rich and specific resource. A wide range of arts practitioners around the world were invited or attracted to engage with our performance courses from their early days; among them - Mark Tobey who exerted a great influence on American Abstract Expressionism, musician John Cage, German choreographer Kurt Jooss with his dance group Ballet Jooss, Hungarian choreographer Rudolph von Laban, Russian actor and acting educationist Michael Chekhov, Polish composer Lutoslawski - and the list continues. Artists and writers from Asia also brought influence and inspiration to the artistic practices; among them - Indian musician Ravi Shankar, Indian poet Rabindranath Tagore.

University College Falmouth continues its tradition of involvement with international Art, Design, Media and Writing practitioners; amongst them - American illustrator Yuko Shimizu, Bruno Latour (professor and vice-president for research at Science Po Paris), Jeremy Myerson (design journalist, author and Director of the Helen Hamlyn Centre, and Innovation, RCA), Jan Konings (international designer and Droog collaborator), illustrator and author Benoit Jacques, Kwai-Bun and Amy Tsang from the award-winning Hong Kong based digital animation company ManyMany Creations, Stella d’Ailly (founder of Mossutstallningar and advisory board member for the Norwegian Design and Architecture Centre in Oslo), artists Christina McPhee and Mark Amerika, and many others.
