I needed to do a BJTC-accredited course, and Falmouth seemed ideal because it had the best facilities. It was a fantastic start. We felt like we were in a job. We'd go in at 8.30am, have a news meeting, and then go off and do our stories. It's hard work but it prepares you for what it will be like - I didn't have any nasty surprises when I started my first proper job. If I had gone into my job at ITV without having done the course at Falmouth, I wouldn’t have felt as confident. The course meant I was able to hit the ground running.

I chose Journalism as I was already reading news in a local radio station and my Editor had done the post-grad, so the degree seemed the logical step. After coming down for my interview how could I not want to study here!? My interview laid out the foundations and what I could expect. I was looking forward to broadening my knowledge of journalistic techniques and questioning media in a way I hadn't thought of before. Of course there is also the town itself. The moment I turned off the A road in Truro and saw the palm trees, I knew I didn't want to be anywhere else.

University College Falmouth is part of the Cornwall Skillset Media Academy network - a UK-wide group of institutions identified as centres of excellence in creative media education and training.
The course delivers the multimedia skills and expertise required for working in radio, television, online and cross-platform newsrooms. It's aimed at aspiring journalists who want to work in local, regional or national news.
You get hands-on-experience of producing and presenting TV and radio programmes in real time. This involves making contacts, interviewing live guests, researching and writing news, as well as using the latest online and social media techniques that journalists require in a dynamic multimedia environment. You also get a thorough grounding in media law, media ethics and regulation, and UK politics.
You learn from industry professionals who give you the advice and training you need to get the jobs where you want. Work placements are arranged across the industry in local BBC and independent local radio newsrooms, national television current affairs outlets like BBC Panorama and independent production companies.
Our many graduates include Fergus Walsh (BBC medical correspondent), Lorna Dunkley (Sky News presenter), Alicia McCarthy (BBC Parliament senior broadcast journalist), Dan Rivers (CNN senior international correspondent), Alison Mitchell (BBC Five Live sports presenter and commentator), Angus Walker (ITV China correspondent), and Rob Walker (BBC sports reporter, presenter and commentator).
The broadcast journalism course was very intensive and rewarding. I left feeling equipped to get a job as a journalist, and was employed by the BBC within weeks. Sophie Benzing, Broadcast Journalism and newsreader/presenter on BBC Radio 5 Live.
This broadcast journalism course gave me an essential grounding in law for journalists. Most crucial was the two placements it secured – at BBC Radio Oxford and BRMB Radio in Birmingham. I never had a burning ambition to be a journalist until I started this course. I couldn’t wait to be a reporter and still love it. Fergus Walsh, Broadcast Journalism and BBC TV News Correspondent
This broadcast journalism course was invaluable to my career and I use the knowledge I acquired at Falmouth on a daily basis.Lorna Dunkley, Broadcast Journalism and Sunrise Presenter on Sky News
