20th Century Art & Design hosts successful symposium

Course Leader for PgDip/MA 20th Century Art & Design, Fiona Hackney, organised a thought provoking and well-attended symposium last month. Entitled Belonging in Britain, the aim of the symposium was to outline the debates around ‘race’ and cultural heritage, defining terms and exploring what ‘Belonging in Britain’ means.

With speakers such as Caroline Bressey (Research Fellow at University College London’s Department of Geography) on the subject of ‘the black presence’ in 19th and early 20th century London; Jo Littler from Middlesex University on the topic of The Politics of Heritage: The Legacies of ‘Race’; Photographer and Goldsmiths’ Research Fellow, Ingrid Pollard; and V&A Senior Research Fellow in Black Visual Culture, Carol Tulloch, the event confronted ‘old stories’, myths and assumptions; sketched out new narratives and possibilities; and reimagined ‘Britishness’ in a more profoundly inclusive way.
