Theatre: Writing BA(Hons)

Theatre: Writing

"Today the role of writers in performance making is being re-invented in exciting and challenging ways. More often than not, a performance involves more than one writer and many different kinds of writing. But writing in its diverse forms remains central." David Williams, Senior Lecturer

Exploration of the role of language and writing is at the heart of contemporary performance practices. Working alongside the Performance and Directing students, this course focuses on the ways that writers are implicated in the creation of collaboratively devised work, and on techniques for generating texts for stimulating, professional-quality new performances.

You'll look at recent histories and practices of writing in, and for, theatre and be introduced to a spectrum of writing practice through both practical workshops and theoretical study. These include sources to stimulate writing (including adapting existing texts) and responding to images, spaces and other stimuli. You'll discuss language, explore different modes and forms of writing - such as autobiographical, fictional, poetic, descriptive, song and conceptual - and learn about practices of collaborative writing, editing and re-writing that will be useful in your career.

Putting you in contact with a range of experienced writers who'll share their professional approaches and insights, this course also gives you ample opportunity to hone your craft by writing for new performances with fellow students.
