Contemporary theatre no longer takes place solely within a specifically designed auditorium. This has fundamentally changed the relationship between designer, performer, director and playwright - greatly expanding the possibilities of theatre. Crucially, the roles of designers and producers have moved from technical support to taking creative responsibility for the generating, shaping and production of performances. This new course will help you discover the richly varied practices that make up contemporary theatre and prepare you for an exciting career.

What will I get out of the course?

This course helps you develop the skills and knowledge needed to thrive within the profession; engaging with both the practical and the intellectual elements of a project and learning to meet the variety of challenges each project creates - from social contexts to health and safety procedure. As well as learning effective use of the voice and body, texts, spaces and objects, you'll gain expertise in the use of lighting, video, sound and digital media, developing the essential practical skills and deep understanding that will fuel your potential for groundbreaking work with leading theatre companies.

  • Look closely at the design and construction of sets, environments and spaces within which performance can occur; researching and develop ideas for use in many different types of performance situations - from large theatres to community settings and projects in non-traditional spaces.
  • Learn a wide range of new skills through a combination of practical workshops and theoretical study.
  • Benefit from visiting professionals, for example Michael Grandage, artistic director of the Donmar Warehouse in London.
  • Complete a study project that fully engages you with the entrepreneurial demands of professional theatre practice, providing you with the opportunity to negotiate your project in a professional, community, or culturally specific setting. Projects can be developed locally or further afield in the UK or Europe.
  • Study at the stunning Tremough Campus and be based in our new Performance Centre, a high-specification facility purpose-built for students' specific needs with the very latest equipment.

Professorial lecture series

Michael Grandage

Falmouth's Professorial lecture series aims to produce an engaging and challenging public programme that stimulates the intellectual curiosity of our staff, students and alumni, our research collaborators, our industry partners, our local communities and other supporters.

Recent lectures of interest to Theatre students include Michael Grandage, artistic director of Donmar Warehouse in London. Michael has won every major theatre award and ranges from the European classical repertoire to new plays and musicals. He has worked with many of the UK's leading actors, such as Kenneth Branagh, Jude Law and Joseph Fiennes.

Course entry requirements

A minimum of 220 UCAS points, mainly from the A2 level (including one Grade B), equivalent Level 3 qualifications or relevant experience. .

Interview dates and selection process

Selection days will commence in December.

Selection days will involve improvisation and working in small groups. Applicants will be expected to bring:

  • A prepared piece of text of no more than five lines. This fragment may be your own writing or it may be text from another source that interests you. The prepared material will be used for group improvisation and devising exercises. Please bring comfortable clothes for movement.
  • A short review of a contemporary performance that you have recently seen (a page at most).
