It's been so long since I left Dartington but I will never forget the experience. I was a drama student which included dance and, my preference, Writing for Performance. Being a student there opened my eyes to a whole world of communication through the arts. I loved the intensity, the forward-looking approach and the atmosphere of commitment to asking questions and finding new answers.

Klaus is an award-winning director, scenographer, performer and poet who works with audience immersive theatre and installations. He is co-founder of Living Structures, a critically acclaimed, multi-disciplinary collective that creates visual, physical and musical performances within large-scale structures.
I graduated from Dartington with a first in Theatre in 1995. It seems a long time ago but the experience of studying at Dartington has always stayed with me and continues to inspire me. I had a very happy and expansive time there, learning about multidisciplinary approaches to art-making, using the body, the self, all thought about in terms of collaboration rather than commercialism and production. This in itself now seems unique. The boundaries were fluid. I wrote, sang, made installations, performed and travelled, including three months in Holland training the body at SNDO (School for New Dance Development), where I remember whole mornings spent moving across a floor.
I left Dartington in 1996. How can I begin to sum up everything that has happened since then? The hundreds of anecdotes, all far too long. I remember something hidden away in a box and decide to start at the beginning, life before Dartington.

Theatre students share a common first year of study, giving you the chance to gain knowledge not only in your chosen specialism but also to experience how each of the roles and forms contemporary theatre relate to one another. In the second year you'll be able to choose and develop your own focus within devising projects through a strand of specialist focus modules and negotiated projects in the final year.
Together with our staff, who are active practitioners and researchers, you'll have the chance to develop your craft and contribute to a dynamic, experimental and committed community of artists including students from diverse backgrounds, different countries and with varied aspirations.
You'll develop the practical skills the various forms, roles and contexts demand, including understanding the building blocks of performance language - space, light, sound, image, audience - and how they can be arranged, layered and composed.
This degree will also enable you to develop physically, vocally and imaginatively through practical workshops and theoretical study, as well as concentrating on particular skills of theatre making such as acting, directing, performance, writing and working with media and technology. Plus, you'll learn all about working collaboratively through improvisation, ensemble work, and study of the histories of theatre engaging with these changing roles and forms in contemporary theatre.
Essentially, you'll graduate understanding the vital connection between theatre makers and the audiences, consumers, communities, industry and cultures they interact with, so that you can go on to make your own mark in this exciting world.
The course is taught through classes, lectures, workshops, performance projects, group critiques/seminars, and individual tutorials. Lecturer and student-led initiatives in performances and presentations of work and regular visiting artist workshops are also central to the course.
Assessment is 100% coursework, through written work, studio-based practice and performances. Working collaboratively with other students, you'll also have the opportunity to present your work as part of an exciting public festival showcase.
You'll be based in our brand new purpose-built Performance Centre, which has excellent facilities for theatre students including:
