Radio productionPodcasts, broadband, digital: it’s never been such an exciting time for radio. Just when media observers were signalling the end for the medium, new technologies and global competition have given radio a new lease of life and there are now more stations and brands than ever before. With this expansion comes a hunger for new programme genres and formats, a hunger for fresh ideas – so we’ve responded with a new Foundation Degree in Radio Production, to enable you to hone your skills and keep apace with the industry’s evolution.

From the word go you’ll be learning from practising professionals, working on a real radio station through our foundation degree in radio production. University College Falmouth has been granted a community radio license by Ofcom, so that, in conjunction with working on content for the College’s internet radio station, Radiowave, you’ll get practical experience of working in a real world broadcast environment.

The foundation radio production course will give you a good grounding in radio production skills – from audio recording, editing, mixing and producing packages to audience research and scheduling – and the chance to produce and present regular shows, including talk radio, news, documentaries, drama series, live music broadcasts, podcasts and web audio. You’ll also learn about the business of radio, from managing a station to the importance of ratings, marketing and advertising in an increasingly crowded market. There’ll also be the opportunity of a work placement with one of our professional broadcast partners, to put what you’ve learnt into practice.

But this course is not just about equipping you with technical skills and business knowledge – it’s also about driving you to come up with new ways of looking at radio programming and content, and to produce ideas that will work. By learning about the history and theory behind radio in a social and cultural context, you’ll gain a full knowledge of the medium’s development, its future and your future within it.

Course entry requirements

Radio production
UCAS Tariff 180 points, mainly from the A2 level, or the equivalent in appropriate 14-19 Specialist Diploma, National Diploma or Access to HE Awards, or experience. We welcome applications from students with appropriate qualifications, prior relevant learning or experience, or demonstrable interest and knowledge in a subject. We welcome students of all ages, from all countries, backgrounds and cultures.

Interview dates and selection process

Interviews will commence in February.

The interview will include a campus tour and an individual interview. Applicants are not expected to bring a portfolio to interview but will be asked to discuss their knowledge of, commitment to and enthusiasm for the subject.
