Why study a Foundation Degree in Radio Production at University College Falmouth?

The re-birth of radio, driven by new technologies, means there's never been a better time to focus on a career within the industry. Falmouth's Foundation Degree in Radio Production enables students to start working as radio practitioners right from the start of the course.

Taught units give you the core skills and knowledge to operate as a proficient and responsible broadcaster. In Level One you also spend two days a week working for Falmouth and Penryn's community radio station, 'The Source', honing your technical, packing and presenting skills on live and pre-recorded programmes. In Level Two you have the opportunity to specialise in a chosen area of radio production and develop close working relationships with professional broadcasters.

If you have a passion for making radio, Falmouth is the place for you. Our new Foundation Degree in Radio Production will equip you with the skills required to flourish in this rapidly evolving world, from audio recording, editing, mixing and producing through to research and scheduling. You'll also learn about the business of radio, from managing a station to the importance of ratings, marketing and advertising in an increasingly crowded market.

You'll balance the practical with the theoretical, studying the history of radio, its cultural importance and how this can inform your work. Studying this course will arm you with both the technical skills and ability to create top-quality content so you can contribute to radio's exciting future.  

By choosing to study for a Foundation Degree in Radio Production at Falmouth you will:

  • Gain practical experience of working in a real-world broadcast environment from day one.
  • Work with portable recording and live studio-based equipment in both educational and working environments.
  • Learn how to edit and structure pre-recorded material, alongside the legal and regulatory constraints within which you are required to work.
  • Examine how audiences can be considered and understood, and how they might be appropriately addressed through programme genres.
  • Follow the production process, from initial research through to the creative use of multi-track techniques, to produce your own documentary or drama.
  • Create links with partner institutions and develop your practice through a close working relationship with one, or more, professional broadcasters.
  • Identify and pursue individual specialist roles and develop a portfolio that demonstrates your accomplishments to help gain long-term work placements in Level Two.
  • Benefit from being taught by staff who are also practising professionals.
  • Be based at the stunning Tremough Campus, which boasts industry standard media facilities.
  • Have the opportunity to 'top up' your qualification on completion of the course by applying for the third year of BA(Hons) Digital Media.

How is the course taught?

Practical project work is supported by lectures, seminars, workshops, professional experience, tutorials and visiting speakers. Your progress is evaluated through continuous assessment with no formal examinations, and you'll be encouraged to develop peer and self-evaluation skills.

The cornerstone of the course is learning by doing, requiring you to think of yourself as a broadcaster and to judge yourself by professional standards.

Interview and selection process

All applicants will be invited to an interview. For applicants who have attended an open day a telephone interview may be offered. Interviews will last approximately 20 minutes. There will also be an opportunity for a campus tour and course talk.
