For the past twenty years, our highly-regarded MA in Broadcast Journalism produced graduates like Kirsty who were able to compete successfully in the broadcast news arena.

Developments in technology, new media and communications have changed the way in which news is both produced and disseminated. Broadcasters are actively engaged with the challenges and opportunities offered by the multi-platform and web-based interactive technologies. To reflect these changes, our Broadcast Journalism course has now evolved into the MA in Multimedia Broadcast Journalism.

The course provides the skills and competences required for working in radio, television and multimedia newsrooms, recording and editing packages on desktop systems and working on 24-hour rolling news. It will equip you with a thorough understanding of the social, economic, ethical, regulatory, political, legal, financial and technological frameworks within which broadcast news and current affairs operate. You will also be able to make the best use of our broadcast quality digital recording studios, newsrooms and post-production suites.

You can either apply for the MA in Multimedia Broadcast Journalism or elect to specialise by registering for the MA in Investigative Multimedia Broadcast Journalism, Science Multimedia Broadcast Journalism or Sports Multimedia Broadcast Journalism.

In our industry-standard Media Centre, with support from our highly experienced staff and guidance from industry professionals, you will learn to compile radio, television and multimedia news bulletins, magazine programmes and feature reports. Acting in turn as news editor, presenter and reporter, you’ll also conduct live interviews using the latest digital equipment and gain a solid grounding in the legal and regulatory frameworks essential for understanding how multimedia, radio and television news operate.

All courses run for one year from October, with a taught element of 30 weeks, followed by 15 weeks during which you produce your MA project - an extended piece of professional practice and a 5,000-word dissertation. If after 30 weeks you wish to leave the course, and have been successful in the taught elements, you may leave with the award of Postgraduate Diploma in Multimedia Broadcast Journalism.

Tell me more about MA Investigative Multimedia Broadcast Journalism

Are you passionate about hard-hitting investigations into failures within society’s systems of regulation and the ways in which the rich, the powerful or the corrupt circumvent those systems? MA Investigative Multimedia Broadcast Journalism will teach you the specialist, often confrontational, skills you will need in order to elicit truth, as well as how to structure the complex stories that such investigations yield.

Tell me more about MA Science Multimedia Broadcast Journalism

Assumptions are made in the news about the public's ability to understand scientific and medical ideas. A stark warning about the dangers of measles is being sent to parents of three million unvaccinated children in an unprecedented move to increase uptake of the MMR vaccination this winter. Measles is serious. It can lead to pneumonia, encephalitis and it can kill. Vaccination rates drastically reduced in the late 1990s because of unsubstantiated claims that the MMR vaccine could cause autism. Now over 100,000 children and young people risk infection.

Are you concerned about such assumptions, the detail upon which discoveries are based or from which disputes arise, or the public’s lack of understanding about technology and science in general? MA Science Multimedia Broadcast Journalism examines the relationship between the scientist and the journalist and teaches you how to translate the language of science for the general listener or viewer.

Tell me more about MA Sports Multimedia Broadcast Journalism

Are you a sports fanatic who wants to learn more about current practice, trends, concepts and issues that feed contemporary sports journalism? Are you aware of the latest changes in key areas such as drugs, corruption, the Olympic movement and the politics of sport? Then MA Sports Multimedia Broadcast Journalism is for you.
