Two graduates of University College Falmouth's long-established MA in Multimedia Broadcast Journalism have struck gold in the BBC Radio Awards, known as the Gillards.

The presenter of BBC Radio Cornwall's popular lunchtime phone-in, Laurence Reed, who completed his studies at the College in 1990 and his producer, Issy Taylor, who graduated from the course in 2004, attended an awards ceremony in Nottingham last week to discover that their show was the winner of the Gold Award in a brand new category for Best Daytime Programme.

Laurence's phone-in was up against more than 20 other daytime programmes entered by BBC local stations.

The judges, who were looking for a show that informed, stimulated and moved its listeners as well as offering them good company, praised Laurence's programme, which specialises in no nonsense calls and comment, as a fine example of mature radio. They also said that the show demonstrated a real sense of place and was clearly rooted and relevant to the community it served. Laurence's winning entry included highlights from his ten-town fund raising tour for Children's Hospice South West and coverage of a campaign to help a woman from Falmouth who suffered from agoraphobia.

BBC Radio Cornwall presenter, Laurence Reed with the Gillard.Combining serious subject matter with the lighter side of life, Laurence said that this award was for his listeners as it was their interaction that made the show what it was. "I'm absolutely delighted with this Award. It is a great honour to receive it on behalf of those in Cornwall who contribute each day and the staff I work with."

"This latest award for graduates from UCF's MA in Multimedia Broadcast Journalism demonstrates that Falmouth teaches the core skills that really matter in the broadcast industry," said Joint Course Leader, Guy Pannell. "Whether it's finding news, asking penetrating questions or telling stories in a way that engages the audience, Falmouth-trained journalists - on stations the length and breadth of the country and beyond - continue to show that they have what it takes."

The Gillards have been running for ten years and are named after Frank Gillard, the distinguished BBC war correspondent and former MD of BBC Radio, who was the driving force behind the creation of local radio in the 1960s.

University College Falmouth is the only independent Higher Education institution in Cornwall with the powers to award degrees in its own name. It has two campuses in Cornwall - at Woodlane in Falmouth and Tremough in Penryn (which it owns, and jointly manages with the University of Exeter) - and a third campus at Totnes in Devon, following its merger with Dartington College of Arts in 2008.

This merger created a new institution focusing on the expansion of Falmouth's expertise in Art, Design and Media and Dartington's expertise in Choreography, Music, Theatre, Art and Writing. The Devon-based courses will relocate to a new, high-specification Performance Centre at Tremough in 2010, paving the way for a new specialist Arts University in Cornwall by 2012/2013 that will be unique to the South West.

The College is a founding partner in the Combined Universities in Cornwall (CUC), a unique initiative to promote regional economic regeneration through Higher Education, funded mainly by the European Union (Objective One), the South West Regional Development Agency, and the Higher Education Funding Council for England, with support from Cornwall Council.
