In an exciting and new collaboration with Oxford Scientific, the UK's leading picture library specialising in natural history images, University College Falmouth's BA(Hons) Marine and Natural History Photography course has made history in becoming their first educational partner.
Oxford Scientific (OSF) was founded in the early 1960's and is revered worldwide for being a leading natural world specialist for both stock footage and images. Their collection offers in-depth coverage of flora, fauna, science, and the environment and includes techniques such as, time-lapse, slow-motion, macro and micro, as well as many other special effects.
This unique partnership will enable students to submit their images to the picture library with the potential to be seen globally and receive royalties for the use of their images and films as well as receiving invaluable feedback and constructive criticism from the staff at OSF.
Now part of the Photolibrary Group with offices in New York servicing the North American market, plus offices throughout SE Asia and Australasia, OSF are strategically placed to identify potential marketing opportunities for the students images and will be advising them on specific natural and scientific projects to enable them to meet the demand for specialist images.
"I'm really excited about this collaboration and the real world experiences it will bring to the course and the students," said course leader, Dave Matthews. "It confirms the Marine & Natural History Photography course at UCF as a leader in studying natural history imaging and is a fantastic opportunity for students to place their work with an internationally recognised industry leader and will enable them to contribute to the development of the OSF library across a broad range of natural history, terrestrial and marine subjects."
Richard Ward, Photography Liaison at OSF commented, "This collaboration is a demonstration of how the Marine & Natural History Photography course is continually working to build partnerships between education and industry with a sense of realism." He continued, "Submission of work to OSF is normally only available to established and prolific natural history photographers with a national reputation and this partnership demonstrates the confidence we have in the quality of work already being produced on the course that we are delighted to support."
The three year full-time course combines many disciplines, from shooting on location to time lapse, moving image and photomicrography. Based within the Photography Centre, the studios provide the ideal working environment and is fully equipped with specialist facilities for storing wildlife specimens as the very latest in terrestrial and underwater photography equipment ensuring that the sky - and indeed the seabed - is the limit.

University College Falmouth is the only independent Higher Education institution in Cornwall with the powers to award degrees in its own name. It has two campuses in Cornwall - at Woodlane in Falmouth and Tremough in Penryn (which it owns, and jointly manages with the University of Exeter) - and a third campus at Totnes in Devon, following its merger with Dartington College of Arts in 2008.
This merger created a new institution focusing on the expansion of Falmouth's expertise in Art, Design and Media and Dartington's expertise in Choreography, Music, Theatre, Art and Writing. The Devon-based courses will relocate to a new, high-specification Performance Centre at Tremough in 2010, paving the way for a new specialist Arts University in Cornwall by 2012, that will be unique to the South West.
The College is a founding partner in the Combined Universities in Cornwall (CUC), a unique initiative to promote regional economic regeneration through Higher Education, funded mainly by the European Union, the South West Regional Development Agency, and the Higher Education Funding Council for England, with support from Cornwall County Council.
