BA(Hons) Journalism students Ben Sullivan and Camilla Delacoe before they left for their Mumbai magazines adventure

Two BA(Hons) Journalism students from University College Falmouth (UCF) will be flying to India this  week to take up prestigious work placements with BBC Magazines.

Camilla Delacoe and Ben Sullivan will be landing in Mumbai to start their month-long work experience on Monday (19 April 2010) at the Indian editions of Grazia and Lonely Planet magazines, in a partnership project between BBC Magazines and the successful undergraduate Journalism course at Falmouth.

The students are part of a cohort of 55 second-year BA(Hons) Journalism and BA(Hons) Public Relations students from UCF who will be embarking on placements at magazines, newspapers and PR companies in the UK, Australia, the Netherlands and the Channel islands during April and May, including the Times and the Sun newspapers, ITV, LBC, Coast magazine, BBC Magazines in Bristol and leading PR companies, Frank and Ketchum.

Nicholas Brett, Deputy Managing Director of BBC Magazines, one of the first western publishers to enter the booming Indian magazine market through a partnership with the Times of India, said: "It's an exciting adventure and a great training opportunity for journalism students, and we're delighted with the relationship we've struck with Falmouth."

The students will be keeping in touch with their tutors and family via a course forum, blogs and video logs on Twitter whilst they are away.

"These placements will stand us in good stead for when we graduate and pursue jobs in magazine journalism," said Camilla Delacoe of the ‘once in a lifetime experience' that working on Grazia in Mumbai will offer.  "I am extremely excited about getting out there and completely immersing myself in the work," she added.

Ben Sullivan agreed: "My heart's always been set on travelling, and to actually go to India to write for Lonely Planet is just fantastic.  I think this will be a great experience and I'm thankful to have the support of my lecturers and UCF behind me."

"The School of Media has always offered its students a genuine international experience," commented UCF's Director of the School of Media, Paul Inman.  "It is so important for our graduates to have knowledge of global issues borne out of innovative on-the-job training, working alongside practising professionals in their field."

University College Falmouth is the only independent Higher Education institution in Cornwall with the powers to award degrees in its own name.  It has two campuses in Cornwall - at Woodlane in Falmouth and Tremough in Penryn (which it owns, and jointly manages with the University of Exeter) - and a third campus at Totnes in Devon, following its merger with Dartington College of Arts in 2008.

This merger created a new institution focusing on the expansion of Falmouth's expertise in Art, Design and Media and Dartington's expertise in Choreography, Music, Theatre, Art and Writing.  The Devon-based courses will relocate to a new, high-specification Performance Centre at Tremough in 2010, paving the way for a new specialist Arts University in Cornwall by 2013/2014 that will be unique to the South West.

The University College is a founding partner in the Combined Universities in Cornwall (CUC), a unique initiative to promote regional economic regeneration through Higher Education, funded mainly by the European Union (Objective One and Convergence), the South West Regional Development Agency, and the Higher Education Funding Council for England, with support from Cornwall Council.
