Singgih S Kartono in actionAutonomatic, the 3D digital research cluster that explores new ways of integrating computer aided design and manufacture with traditional making skills, helped to facilitate a hugely inspirational talk at the Tremough Design Centre by the Indonesian designer, Singgih S Kartono this week.

Singgih's wooden radio won the Brit Insurance Design Awards 2009 presented at the Design Museum last month.

Whilst being a very beautiful product, one of the interesting aspects of the radio is how Singgih has created a design with a holistic approach, aiming to facilitate social empowerment and establish a sustainable local industry which utilises renewable resources. Singgih and his team ensure that they only use trees from plantations that care for the re-plantation in their hometown and a tree is planted for each tree used. Each wooden radio is made of a single piece and and is handcrafted in 16 hours.
