University College Falmouth has scooped six major Design & Art Direction (D&AD) awards; the prestigious Best Stand in Show and a Best New Blood at the D&AD's New Blood 2010 exhibition; and a First Prize Yellow Pencil, a second prize and two Commendations at the D&AD Global Student Awards.
D&AD is a not-for-profit organisation that represents the design, advertising and creative communities on a global scale. As a key player it sets industry standards, educates and inspires the next generation, and promotes the importance of creativity, innovation and ideas within the business community.
The New Blood exhibition features the advertising and design work of the very best university and college students from across the UK. A distinguished panel of creative design professionals judge which stand, team or individual displays the most outstanding creative ideas, executed and presented to the highest standard.
Walking away with the Best Stand in Show award from over 80 courses present both from the UK and abroad is a significant achievement. Stands are judged on quality of work, craft and presentation. The industry feedback was overwhelming in praise for the BA(Hons) Graphic Design course's consistency of quality in conceptual thinking and the professional standards of execution. This award tops off another successful year for the Graphics course whose students have received 21 nominations and awards across a number of national and international award schemes.
In addition Ben Cridland BA(Hons) Graphic Design was selected out of approximately 2000 students to receive one of only 27 awards given for Best New Blood. These awards recognise the highest quality and presentation of the student's work. His A1 poster contemplates the significance of the number 100 and focuses on the time period between 1909 and 2009 with a time-line highlighting the major events and people who had a major impact during this period.
At the D&AD Global Student Awards Ceremony at Spitalfields Market, London only 13 First Prizes, 28 Second Prizes and 44 Commendations were awarded to students from all over Europe, Asia and North America.
First Prize Student Yellow Pencil for the Graphic Design - Interactive Design category went to Matt Turnbull, BA(Hons) Graphic Design for his Mobile Health Service application for a fictitious Nokia mobile phone. This medical health application points to the future possibilities of mobile technologies for public health uses including diagnosing symptoms, booking appointments and advising on when to take medication. John Molesworth, (BA(Hons) Graphic Design) also receiving a Commendation within this category for Expiry Mate, an application that alerts users when items in the kitchen are about to expire.
Jonathan Martin, (BA(Hons) Graphic Design) won Second Prize within the Advertising - Integrated category for his answer to the Lloyds TSB partnership with the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games Campaign.
Jon Unwin, Course Leader commented: "We are delighted with these awards, including our 11th D&AD yellow pencil in the last 6 years, reflecting our students continued passion for their subject, talent and creativity; also the high quality of the teaching provided which continues to prepare them so effectively for the demands of the creative industry."
In addition Nicola Horn, BA(Hons) 3D Design, also won a Commendation in the Product Design category for her Coffee Potter that turns waste coffee grounds into a limitless supply of biodegradable yet sturdy plant plots.
In book awards were also given to BA(Hons) Graphic Design students Lucy Knight, Jonathan Rich and Dominic Davidson-Merritt with the Open Brief, Advertising - Viral and Open Brief - What Else Do You Do categories.

University College Falmouth is the only independent Higher Education institution in Cornwall with the powers to award degrees in its own name. It has two campuses in Cornwall - at Woodlane in Falmouth and Tremough in Penryn (which it owns, and jointly manages with the University of Exeter) - and a third campus at Totnes in Devon, following its merger with Dartington College of Arts in 2008.
This merger created a new institution focusing on the expansion of Falmouth's expertise in Art, Design and Media and Dartington's expertise in Choreography, Music, Theatre, Art and Writing. The Devon-based courses will relocate to a new, high-specification Performance Centre at Tremough in 2010, paving the way for a new specialist Arts University in Cornwall by 2013/2014 that will be unique to the South West.
The University College is a founding partner in the Combined Universities in Cornwall (CUC), a unique initiative to promote regional economic regeneration through Higher Education, funded mainly by the European Union (Objective One and Convergence), the South West Regional Development Agency, and the Higher Education Funding Council for England, with support from Cornwall Council.
