Dan McCrum, a second-year student on University College Falmouth's BA(Hons) in Press & Editorial Photography, is one of the main prize winners of the Sony Twilight Football Photography competition, sponsored by the Telegraph Media Group.
Sony hosted the competition to showcase the low light capabilities of its new range of cameras and camcorders. Competition entrants were asked to submit images of people playing football that expressed the beauty of twilight and nine winners were chosen.
Those nine winners were then recruited as official photographers to cover the matches in a global Twilight Football event on September 22 and 23 2009, using cameras equipped with Sony's new ‘Exmor R' sensor technology to make the most of the stunning low light action. Marking the autumnal equinox when twilight is at its longest, seven five-a-side football games were played in turn, beginning in Venice and ending in South Africa.
Dan won the trip of a lifetime to cover the game in Australia's Pinnacle Desert.
Other locations included the Iguazu Falls in Argentina, the Antequera Bullring in Spain, Col du Midi in France and Tintagel Castle in Cornwall.
"A friend alerted me to the Twilight competition and I knew I had football pictures that would fit the bill so I sent in this photograph of Truro City and ACF Totton," explained Dan of the photograph that singled him out for success. "I was doing a project for university on football in Cornwall and I picked this game because the teams have a strong FA Vase rivalry," he said. "Truro City is owned by a property developer who is ambitious for the team, so I knew there'd be a good atmosphere. I got permission to be on the pitch. I was hanging around the goal and decided to focus on the net. It resulted in this nice-looking image, which has always been one of my favourite pictures. Especially now! It was great telling my family that I'd won and seeing how proud my mum is of me. As my ambition is to become a travel photographer and capture images of different lifestyles, cultures and societies after graduation, my trip to Australia was absolutely amazing."
"We believe in preparing our students to enter this highly competitive industry by instilling in them the skills, knowledge and professional attitude that gives them the edge in such a competitive business," added Course Leader, Mal Stone. "Entering competitions is part of this process, and we encourage our students to enter as many as they can."

University College Falmouth is the only independent Higher Education institution in Cornwall with the powers to award degrees in its own name. It has two campuses in Cornwall - at Woodlane in Falmouth and Tremough in Penryn (which it owns, and jointly manages with the University of Exeter) - and a third campus at Totnes in Devon, following its merger with Dartington College of Arts in 2008.
This merger created a new institution focusing on the expansion of Falmouth's expertise in Art, Design and Media and Dartington's expertise in Choreography, Music, Theatre, Art and Writing. The Devon-based courses will relocate to a new, high-specification Performance Centre at Tremough in 2010, paving the way for a new specialist Arts University in Cornwall by 2012/2013 that will be unique to the South West.
The College is a founding partner in the Combined Universities in Cornwall (CUC), a unique initiative to promote regional economic regeneration through Higher Education, funded mainly by the European Union (Objective One), the South West Regional Development Agency, and the Higher Education Funding Council for England, with support from Cornwall Council.
