On Monday 16 November, a Sardinian performance company, Carovana, will bring their community mining project, Disrupted Landscapes, to life in the heart of the richest and largest mining district in the world at Geevor Tin Mine in collaboration with University College Falmouth's Dartington Campus. The event will be an installation and presentation.
The atmospheric setting of Geevor's tin floors in the mill will provide an impressive backdrop for the installation designed to develop sensitivity towards places, people and the environment through research and practice in the arts. The journey begins with physical locations and attempts to re-establish bridges across disrupted landscapes bringing together communities and drawing on a number of elements from the ever present pounding waves of the sea, the majestic and resilient mines to the beautiful and stark rural landscapes and their disruption.
The installation begins at 7.30pm followed by a presentation and discussion in the Hard Rock Museum's cinema.
This latest performance project is one of many collaborations between Carovana SMI Sound Movement Image, and UCF's Dartington Campus and involves MA and undergraduate students who have been on an Erasmus placement with Carovana in Sardinia, working with a number of mining communities. The project has generated a collaboration between two mining communities - Igelsias, situated in the hills southwest of Sardinia in Italy, where they extracted lead, zinc and silver and Geevor, set amidst the magnificent coastal scenery of Cornwall.
The Erasmus programme enables students at higher education institutions throughout Europe to study at participating organisations in another European countries for three to twelve months contributing to their personal and professional development, including languages and intercultural competence.
Prior to the event, there will be an informal pre-event gathering at The Star Inn, St Just on 15 November from 7.30pm featuring exchanges of culture, thoughts and memories of Cornwall and Sardinia with representatives from these two proud mining communities, Carovana SMI and members of the St Just and Pendeen community.
This inspirational and challenging work will be given a performance presentation on Thursday 19 November at 3.30pm in Studio 1 at UCF's Dartington Campus where the audience can also take part in meetings and discussions about the research, practice and contexts of the project and to see other examples of performance and landscape work.

University College Falmouth is the only independent Higher Education institution in Cornwall with the powers to award degrees in its own name. It has two campuses in Cornwall - at Woodlane in Falmouth and Tremough in Penryn (which it owns, and jointly manages with the University of Exeter) - and a third campus at Totnes in Devon, following its merger with Dartington College of Arts in 2008.
This merger created a new institution focusing on the expansion of Falmouth's expertise in Art, Design and Media and Dartington's expertise in Choreography, Music, Theatre, Art and Writing. The Devon-based courses will relocate to a new, high-specification Performance Centre at Tremough in 2010, paving the way for a new specialist Arts University in Cornwall by 2012/2013 that will be unique to the South West.
The College is a founding partner in the Combined Universities in Cornwall (CUC), a unique initiative to promote regional economic regeneration through Higher Education, funded mainly by the European Union (Objective One), the South West Regional Development Agency, and the Higher Education Funding Council for England, with support from Cornwall Council.
