Distinguished artist, Breon O'Casey, has generously gifted a painting to University College Falmouth's Art Collection, entitled Bird in a Landscape.

Having served his apprenticeship with Denis Mitchell and Barbara Hepworth, Breon O'Casey is closely associated with the St Ives School of painters and sculptors. His work is inspired by nature and in particular, by the birdlife in his garden near Newlyn.

The son of Irish playwright, Sean O'Casey, Breon O'Casey has exhibited at leading galleries in London, Dublin, New York and Philadelphia and in group exhibitions with Sir Terry Frost RA, Sandra Blow RA and Bernard Leach. His work is included in the public collections of Arts Council of Great Britain; Arts Council of Northern Ireland; Trinity College, Dublin; Somerville College, Oxford; the Tate; the Royal Museum of Scotland; and the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths at the V & A amongst many others.

"It is an honour to receive this generous donation from an artist who has made such a significant contribution to Cornwall's creative landscape, and whose work continues to impress and inspire," said University College Falmouth's Rector, Professor Alan Livingston on accepting the gift on behalf of the College. "Our art collection is a major resource for our students and we thank Breon warmly for this important contribution to it."

University College Falmouth conferred an Honorary Fellowship on Breon O'Casey in 2006 in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the artistic and cultural development of Cornwall.

Breon O'Casey's exhibition at the Lemon Street Gallery runs until 29 August. For further information, visit http://www.lemonstreetgallery.co.uk/.

University College Falmouth is the only independent Higher Education institution in Cornwall with the powers to award degrees in its own name. It has two campuses in Cornwall - at Woodlane in Falmouth and Tremough in Penryn (which it owns, and jointly manages with the University of Exeter) - and a third campus at Totnes in Devon, following its merger with Dartington College of Arts in 2008.

This merger created a new institution focusing on the expansion of Falmouth's expertise in Art, Design and Media and Dartington's expertise in Choreography, Music, Theatre, Art and Writing. The Devon-based courses will relocate to a new, high-specification Performance Centre at Tremough in 2010, paving the way for a new specialist Arts University in Cornwall by 2012/2013 that will be unique to the South West.

The College is a founding partner in the Combined Universities in Cornwall (CUC), a unique initiative to promote regional economic regeneration through Higher Education, funded mainly by the European Union (Objective One), the South West Regional Development Agency, and the Higher Education Funding Council for England, with support from Cornwall Council.
