MA International Journalism Graduate, Ciara Sutton joins Reuters pioneering interactive TV service.University College Falmouth MA International Journalism students show that despite the recession, there are still great jobs in the media for the right candidates.

Prior to graduation, Ciara Sutton beat off strong competition from seasoned professional journalists to secure a staff job as an assistant producer at Reuters brand new pioneering interactive TV service.

"A year ago I was ambitious to become an international TV journalist, but absolutely no idea how to be one," said Ciara. "Less than a year on from those first few daunting days at UCF, I am embracing the exact same, first day of school feelings, but this time, it's as an Assistant Producer for Reuters Television."

In the fast paced and rapidly evolving world of global news the MA in International Journalism is designed to train journalists who want to work in TV, radio, online and print within UK and International newsrooms or report from the world's hotspots. The course equips students with the skills and confidence to pursue their ambitions and find work despite the recession hitting the media.

As well as learning how to present a piece to camera, news writing, editing and producing, Ciara was able to take advantage of UCF's unique Hostile Environment Training which teaches the students how to keep themselves safe in tricky situations. "What sets the course apart from so many others, is its forward thinking approach to the future of multimedia journalism making it more than just a university course - it's training for one of the most fulfilling and exciting jobs in the world!"

"I'm delighted that Ciara has managed to join one of the world's most prestigious international news organisations so early in her career, " said former Reuters Editor and course leader, George Matheson. "Her success and those of her fellow MA International Journalism graduates proves that despite the recession there are still top jobs available for students with the right training."

This year's graduates have also secured work at the US TV network NBC, ITN in London and Radio France International in Paris.

University College Falmouth is the only independent Higher Education institution in Cornwall with the powers to award degrees in its own name. It has two campuses in Cornwall - at Woodlane in Falmouth and Tremough in Penryn (which it owns, and jointly manages with the University of Exeter) - and a third campus at Totnes in Devon, following its merger with Dartington College of Arts in 2008.

This merger created a new institution focusing on the expansion of Falmouth's expertise in Art, Design and Media and Dartington's expertise in Choreography, Music, Theatre, Art and Writing. The Devon-based courses will relocate to a new, high-specification Performance Centre at Tremough in 2010, paving the way for a new specialist Arts University in Cornwall by 2012/2013 that will be unique to the South West.

The College is a founding partner in the Combined Universities in Cornwall (CUC), a unique initiative to promote regional economic regeneration through Higher Education, funded mainly by the European Union (Objective One), the South West Regional Development Agency, and the Higher Education Funding Council for England, with support from Cornwall Council.
