University College Falmouth is to team up with leading London agency, The Writer and some of the world’s leading experts to help businesses in the south west harness the power of words in order to boost profits.
The first of its kind in the region, the College’s Business Writing Seminar will be held at the National Maritime Museum Cornwall in Falmouth on Friday 13 October 2006.“If your business uses the right words to talk to people, they’ll hear, they’ll buy, and they may even grow to love you,” explains Paul Sullivan, who is the College’s Professional Writing Business Fellow. “Get the words wrong and they won’t listen or buy – and they could even end up hating you.”
This one-day seminar, aimed primarily at company directors, marketing personnel and writers in both the public and private sectors, brings together a range of influential speakers who represent the cutting-edge of business writing today – experts in branding, verbal identity and tone of voice – and their combined client list reads like a Who’s Who of top British and global businesses.
John Simmons is a former director of verbal identity at Interbrand, a founder member of the business writers’ group, 26, and recent Chair of the Writing for Design jury at the D&AD awards. The author of three best-selling books on business writing, he is widely regarded as the person who set the current tone for tone of voice in corporate identity.
Neil Taylor trains people to become more creative and effective writers at work – people like the BBC, Standard Life, Radio 1, Sotheby’s, Merrill Lynch and Ofgem. He’s also written two books, Search Me: The Surprising Success of Google, and The Name of the Beast, about the process and perils of naming products, companies and brands.
Margaret Oscar is also a founder member of the 26 group, and a former brand manager for verbal identity at Orange. She has worked for Hamleys, John Lewis and Yell, and is currently working on the Philips World Cup sponsorship team.
“We’ll also be hearing from a host of leading copywriters, designers and creatives, all with strong views on words and how to use them,” adds Christina Bunce who leads the College’s MA in Professional Writing. “In the afternoon, we get up close and personal, with mind-stretching writing workshops and a live opportunity to sit back and watch as our experts take on a selection of delegates’ businesses and analyse and improve their branding, verbal identity and tone of voice. All this, and you get to spend the weekend in one the most beautiful parts of Britain.”
