An MA Professional Writing student at University College Falmouth has cut his teeth writing for some of the UK’s best-known brands whilst still on the course.
Miles Taylor was the winner of a unique bursary offered by The Writer, a London consultancy that manages writing projects, helps brands define their tone of voice and trains people to become better writers. Its clients include Standard Life, O2, the BBC, Tate and lastminute.com.
As well as providing financial support towards the cost of his studies, The Writer’s Apprentice bursary also included three stints of work experience at the agency’s London office. Miles, who recently completed the first of these, says: “This has been a fantastic opportunity for me to get a real insight into how a successful writing agency operates, and a feel for the type of work I might be doing in the future. Everyone at The Writer has been really helpful, giving me lots of valuable mentoring and feedback. I’ve already learnt so much from just two weeks there. I can’t wait to go back.”
Miles’s background in IT and Design stood him in good stead for his assignments at The Writer. The agency’s managing director Martin Hennessy says: “Falmouth’s MA in Professional Writing has a great track record in finding and training some of the sharpest writing tools in the box. And Miles proved once again that the College hasn’t lost its edge! Miles has been great. We are very lucky to have him.”
The Writer has been closely involved with the MA Professional Writing course since its inception, and Miles is the fourth student to benefit from the bursary scheme. One former Writer’s Apprentice, Joe Weir, is now working full-time at the agency on accounts including the BBC, Unilever, Marks & Spencer and HSBC.
Professional Writing Course Leader, Christina Bunce, says: “It’s important for us to have strong links with organisations working at the forefront of the writing profession – and the people at The Writer have done a huge amount to raise awareness of the difference that good written communications can make to businesses. They’ve also made a valuable contribution to the MA course itself, helping us to align it with the needs of the industry. It’s hard to imagine a better partner to work with – and for anyone planning to make a career as a copywriter there couldn’t be a more stimulating environment in which to gain experience.”
The College’s MA in Professional Writing is a one-year, intensive course that allows students to explore a variety of specialist options including fiction, creative non-fiction, features journalism, writing creatively for business and TV scriptwriting. Graduates of the course are working in a wide range of writing and editorial roles across the media industry.
