University College Falmouth's filmmakers of tomorrow create, shoot and edit - all in one day!

Students and staff from University College Falmouth were recently given the opportunity to create a film in one day as part of the College’s new FiLM_on_the_FLy workshops.

Students editing their filmsThe unique FiLM_on_the_FLy workshops are exclusively available to the College’s students and staff who want to experience the entire creative process of filmmaking in a single day, from the shoot through to the edit and final mastering onto DVD. Staff and students are asked to submit an idea for a film that deviates from mainstream narratives, that can be accompanied by any type of soundtrack and is no longer than 5 minutes.

iRes provided the facilities for the fast-tracked production process.
iRes: Interactive Art and Design is a research cluster engaged in practice-led research that explores the relationships between art, design and new technologies.

The second stage of the FiLM_on_the_FLy workshop called for student and staff filmmakers to submit their films for an evening screening at hip new bar and bistro, Toast where the shorts were screened alongside a random selection of tunes from audience members’ MP3’s.

MP3 Deli“The evening became reminiscent of what underground experimental avant-garde cinema nights must have been like in the days of Man Ray, Oskar Fischinger's and the filmmakers Co-op,” says MA Interactive Art and Design Lecturer and FiLM_on_the_FLy organiser Serena Rodgers.

“Films produced by students on the BA(Hons) Fine Art course, for example, were being screened first time around with heavy rock soundtracks, then ambient dub, funk or soul. This gave the evening a sense of spontaneity and the excitement of the unknown. It also enabled the filmmakers to view their films in a different light. The night was a packed and atmospheric success!”

Four cash prizes were awarded on the night for the best four experimental films submitted, based on creativity, technical quality and innovation:

BA(Hons) Illustration student Temujin Doran received a cash award for his short, Somnus and Promofunk; an animated lego night-club adventure featuring a motorbike scene from Easy Rider that went down a storm on the night.

BA(Hons) Film Studies student Alex Wright for his film Spain Train, a beautiful journey through Spain via an innovative montage of stills.

BA(Hons) Graphic Design student Paul Betwoski for Breakdown the video & others, a technically elaborate, graphical tour through a 3D space station.

Joint winners BA(Hons) Film Studies student Fern Beresford for Identity, an accomplished piece of gritty reality, packed with impressive graphic visuals, and BA(Hons) Graphic Design student Ali Bendall for I’m Lost, a powerful journey through the life of a woman locked in the body of a child.

FiLm_on_the_FLy plan to develop with  BA(Hons) English with Creative Writing a three-day writing workshop that will enable students to transform an adaptation from script to screen in two days.

FiLm_on_the_Fly also hopes to run some new internal workshops with University College Falmouth,  but also increase its involvement with community projects, as well.  The FiLm_on_the_Fly are also planning a 'drive-in' cinema event this winter to screen new & classic films.
