Katie Robertson, ceramic artist and UCF graduate has recently secured a deal to supply a variety of her work to well-known luxury erotica boutique Coco de Mer in Los Angeles.

After completing her BA(Hons) Studio Ceramics degree, (now the BA(Hons) Contemporary Crafts) at University College Falmouth, Katie has been selling her controversial products with great success and building a respected brand name. Her work has been compared to the flamboyant and provocative Vivienne Westwood and flattered by this likening, Katie said: "She is a heroine of mine and I always aspire to that level of originality and uniqueness".

The majority of Katie's works are made from porcelain; a material she feels lends itself to her controversially ‘rude' work. When commenting on her choice of material, she said: "Porcelain is such a fine and delicate material that I found it tempting to make objects that would defy the normal use of such a material. Its translucency makes it a perfect choice".

This year, Katie's main project has been working on a porcelain chandelier influenced in shape by love beads. For Katie a chandelier "conjures up imagery of tradition and opulence as an established method of lighting." Katie added, "I chose to follow that tradition but give it a modern twist," and elaborated on her work by saying: "My work reflects my love of pleasant lighting and the serenity of porcelain. I believe in promoting the beauty of an object, with fine sculpting and curves." This belief and fine application was very much apparent during her time at University College Falmouth where Katie created sculptures inspired by the sea and rocks. It was at UCF where she explored many aspects of ceramics and found a great love in the mould making process and applying it to create new and exciting shapes.

Katie's deal with Coco de Mer ironically originated from a visit to their London store where she established a good working relationship with the London buyer. Unfortunately they already had a competitive line in her area and she was encouraged to contact their LA store. The American buyer loved her products immensely and asked her to send a selection of her tea cups and saucers as well as her salt and pepper shakers to their LA store.

Katie produces a wide variety of ceramics and as well as creating her well known rude ceramics she is happy to undertake a commission to design and tailor something new.
