Tremough Campus Services' gardening team, led by Head Gardener, David Garwood, made their debut at the Falmouth Flower Show last weekend and were delighted to be awarded first prize in the Double or Semi-double flowered Camellia category - planting them firmly on the horticultural map.

Assisted by Toby Nenning and Sarah Benney, David and his team were on hand all weekend to chat with visitors about the grounds at the Woodlane and Tremough campuses, both of which are renowned for their horticultural splendours and historic collections.

The team were also awarded second prize for single truss, three varieties of Rhododendron; two third prizes for single spray of Rhododendron and single spray of Azalea, and a further two highly commendeds for one spray of Rhododendron and a spray of single flowered Camellia.

"It was great to meet so many people who made us very welcome and remembered the gardens and grounds at Tremough and Woodlane," said David. "We were able to dispel a few local myths and confirm that the Camellias and Rhododendrons are very much alive and thriving as revealed by the display we were able to put on at the show."

David and his team are currently working on a large planting programme at the Tremough and Woodlane campuses not only to enhance the existing Rhododendron and Camellia collections, but also to add a range of native Cornish plantings that encourage wildlife and further enhance the sub-tropical planting that Cornwall's climate allows.

University College Falmouth is the only independent Higher Education institution in Cornwall with the powers to award degrees in its own name. It has two campuses in Cornwall - at Woodlane in Falmouth and Tremough in Penryn (which it owns, and jointly manages with the University of Exeter) - and a third campus at Totnes in Devon, following its merger with Dartington College of Arts in 2008.

This merger created a new institution focusing on the expansion of Falmouth's expertise in Art, Design and Media and Dartington's expertise in Choreography, Music, Theatre, Art and Writing. The Devon-based courses will relocate to a new, high-specification Performance Centre at Tremough in 2010, paving the way for a new specialist Arts University in Cornwall by 2012, that will be unique to the South West.

The College is a founding partner in the Combined Universities in Cornwall (CUC), a unique initiative to promote regional economic regeneration through Higher Education, funded mainly by the European Union, the South West Regional Development Agency, and the Higher Education Funding Council for England, with support from Cornwall County Council.
