Grace Vanstone, 3rd year BA(Hons) Public Relations

Grace Vanstone, a second year BA(Hons) Public Relations student at University College Falmouth recently found the media spotlight shining on her during her work placement at the prestigious London fashion and lifestyle PR agency, Halpern.

While assisting with the launch of a new boutique hotel for the luxury chocolate brand, Hotel Chocolate, Grace was asked by a photographer for the Mail on Sunday to appear in a shot that appeared on the front page of the Financial Mail on 1 April.

Grace said: "I'm no stranger to the camera as I enjoy modelling in my spare time, but this is the first time I've appeared in the financial pages! It just goes to show what can happen if you take advantage of the opportunities offered by work placements. It's certainly improved my understanding of what goes on at a PR launch, and hopefully this shot will be a good talking point in my portfolio when I'm applying for PR jobs after graduating."

Halpern PR agency has been running for over 15 years and specialises in high-end fashion, beauty, interiors, events management and celebrity PR. Grace's work placement follows a London Study visit to their offices as part of the BA(Hons) Public Relations level 1 study programme encompassing five other prominent PR agencies.

Students may then approach these organisations for a work placement and UCF students have every success in been offered such placements. Currently three further level 1 students are gaining huge amounts of practical experience at work placements with Frank PR and Ketchum Pleon.

As Jon Cope, course leader BA(Hons) Public Relations comments: "The study visits and subsequent work placements that our students gain provides a crucial link between being a student and forging a career in the field of PR.  Students glean real knowledge of the industry whilst developing appropriate attitudes and behaviours for the PR working environment".

University College Falmouth is the only independent Higher Education institution in Cornwall with the powers to award degrees in its own name.  It has two campuses in Cornwall - at Woodlane in Falmouth and Tremough in Penryn (which it owns, and jointly manages with the University of Exeter) - and a third campus at Totnes in Devon, following its merger with Dartington College of Arts in 2008.

This merger created a new institution focusing on the expansion of Falmouth's expertise in Art, Design and Media and Dartington's expertise in Choreography, Music, Theatre, Art and Writing.  The Devon-based courses will relocate to a new, high-specification Performance Centre at Tremough in 2010, paving the way for a new specialist Arts University in Cornwall by 2013/2014 that will be unique to the South West.

The University College is a founding partner in the Combined Universities in Cornwall (CUC), a unique initiative to promote regional economic regeneration through Higher Education, funded mainly by the European Union (Objective One and Convergence), the South West Regional Development Agency, and the Higher Education Funding Council for England, with support from Cornwall Council.
