Shylock's Ghosts to be held at Jewish Museum, Prague

Professor David Peimer, Professor of Theatre is directing his performance, Shylock's Ghosts and presenting academic papers at the 9th World Shakespeare Congress in Prague on Monday 18 July. His group is the only one to have been invited to both perform and present during the event.

David's performance, entitled Shylock's Ghosts: The afterlife of Shakespeare's Jew deconstructs Shakespeare's play, The Merchant of Venice in a range of different cultural contexts. It deploys a number of contrasting interpretations of the play in the context of the history of European anti-Semitism to explore the various possible meanings it may have today.

The performance will be given by Robert Gordon, Profesessor of Drama at Goldsmith's, University of London where he is Director of the Pinter Centre for Performance and Creative Writing.

Professor David Peimer is Professor of Theatre at University College Falmouth and at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. He directs theatre for the Nobel Prize winner Pinter Centre in London and has won many awards. He was the first English speaking director invited to direct at Václav Havel's Theatre, (the first and former President of the Czech Republic).
