Making connections at Falmouth Art Gallery

The Fal area boasts one of the most exciting, diverse, energetic and creative art scenes in Cornwall. Connections, the new exhibition at Falmouth Art Gallery, shows work represented in the town's collection by artists that have a connection, in some way, with University College Falmouth.

Formerly Falmouth School of Art, its origins can be traced to the life classes held in the middle room of Falmouth Art Gallery. These proved so popular that they eventually had to move to bigger premises in Arwenack Avenue. The foundation stone for the School of Art was laid there by the Honourable Lord St Levan on 18 August 1901.

The exhibition celebrates the remarkable contribution to the cultural life of Cornwall made by two former principals, Tom Cross (1931-2009), and Professor Alan Livingston CBE, who retired last year. It features works by past and current students, lecturers, principals, honorary fellows and supporters including major artists such as: Ray Atkins, Trevor Bell, Sandra Blow, Susan Boafo, Laurie Burt, Prunella Clough, Tom Cross, Tom Early, Michael Finn, Sir Terry Frost, Francis Hewlett, Chris Insoll, Kurt Jackson, Richard Long, Danny Markey, Lee Miller, Anthony Penrose and Sir Roland Penrose.

The exhibition will be officially opened at the private view by University College Falmouth's new Rector, Professor Anne Carlisle. This will take place on Friday 26 February 7pm-9pm. All welcome.

The gallery has planned an exciting programme of FREE workshops and events to accompany the exhibition. Family workshops take place every Saturday, just drop in from 2-3 pm. Activities include painting Kurt Jackson style, surreal drawing, abstract pastels and night drawing.

'Connections', in association with the Heritage Lottery Fund, Hine Downing and University College Falmouth, can be seen at Falmouth Art Gallery from 27 February - 17 April 2010. The gallery is open Monday to Saturday 10am-5pm. Admission is free.

For details about accompanying workshops and events please contact Donna Williams on 01326 313863.
