A third-year student from University College Falmouth has been announced the winner of one of America’s most prestigious awards for graphic design. Mark Webber, who graduates from the College’s award-winning BA(Hons) Graphic Design course later this month, has been awarded a Silver Cube at the Art Directors Club Awards in New York.

Founded in New York in 1920 as the first creative collective of its kind, the Art Directors Club is a not-for-profit organisation with an international membership that comprises leading players from the worlds of advertising, design and related visual communications. Its core programme – the international annual awards competition, exhibition and Art Directors Annual – is now in its 87th year and remains unrivalled as an educational and industry resource.
Predominantly for industry, the Art Directors Club Awards scheme also invited students enrolled on undergraduate or graduate-level courses in advertising, graphic design, photography, illustration, and interactive media to participate. Student work was judged separately, but by the same outstanding panel of jurors as the professional competition.
The Silver Cube was awarded to Mark for his typographic map series, entitled Where in the World, for which he carved typography into linoleum, and then printed it to formulate the maps’ designs. For this competition, Mark entered maps for London, New York and Amsterdam.
Mark was one of only a handful of students worldwide to attend the awards ceremony in New York where he rubbed shoulders with the great and good of America’s creative industries.
“I am absolutely thrilled to have won this amazing award,” said Mark of his success. “The New York map was the first one I designed, for the International Society of Typographic Designers (ISTD) competition in 2006,” he explained. “It then appeared in Grafik magazine, which led to the ISTD asking me to design a map of London for their My City, My London exhibition as part of the London Design Festival later the same year,” he added. “I created the Amsterdam map for a second year project at College, and plan to add Paris to the series as soon as I graduate.”
All of this demonstrates the focus of Falmouth’s BA(Hons) Graphic Design course on high-level engagement with industry. Students are encouraged to compete in as many national and international competitions as possible, which enables them to gain valuable experience of responding to live briefs and invaluable feedback from industry experts.
“For Mark to have won the student category of this prestigious professional global award scheme, judged by leading designers like David Carson, is an outstanding achievement,” said Course Leader, Jon Unwin. “Although our students win countless national awards for their creative flair in graphic design, to achieve international recognition for the work of our staff and students adds yet another dimension to our reputation for excellence.”
Mark’s work will be included in the Art Directors Annual and travelling exhibitions, and showcased on the Art Directors Club website.
In April 2008, University College Falmouth merged with Dartington College of Arts to create a new institution focusing on the expansion of Falmouth’s expertise in Art, Design and Media and Dartington’s expertise in Choreography, Music, Theatre, Art and Writing.
The merger will pave the way for a new specialist Arts University in Cornwall in 2012, creating a Higher Education institution unique to the South West.
University College Falmouth is a founding partner in the Combined Universities in Cornwall (CUC), a unique initiative to promote regional economic regeneration through Higher Education, funded mainly by the European Union (Objective One), the South West Regional Development Agency, and the Higher Education Funding Council for England, with support from Cornwall County Council
