Interior Design 2011 Challenge at the Architectural Association

Level 2 BA(Hons) Interior Design students took part in a national design challenge day at the Architectural Association in London, organised by the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and held in partnership with the British institute of Interior Design.

The event - Student Design Charrette 2011 - brought together design students from all over the UK, providing the opportunity to work alongside contemporaries from other universities. A charrette is an American term for a process in which competitive design teams work intensively over a short period (in this case, 9am to 5pm) to provide alternative solutions to a design problem.

Students were put into teams, mentored by an experienced architect or interior designer, and were given the task of solving an interior design issue. It was a CAD-free event allowing only drawings, models and collages, giving students a chance to develop traditional skills.

At the end of the day team submissions were discussed publicly and prizes were awarded. The Chairman of the Jury was the distinguished Paul Finch OBE, long-time head of the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE), Deputy Chair of the Design Council and Editor of The Architectural Review.

The event gave the UCF students an opportunity to revisit the experiences of a one-day design exercise and challenged them to explore how architectural form can create both expressive and rich interior spaces which heighten one's understanding of an overall concept or idea.
